When I was 15 years old, I developed an eating disorder: bulimia. Because of the stigmas that surround eating disorders, I was afraid that if anyone found out, I'd be shamed and alienated-so I hid it from everyone. My bulimia only got worse and progressed into my mid-twenties, which resulted in visits to the doctor's office and even the ER. I was fortunate enough to recover, but I was left with irreparable damage to my digestive system.
Over the years that followed, I relied heavily on over-the-counter digestive medicines to manage daily symptoms like heartburn and bloating. These medicines were effective, but many of them contained ingredients that I personally didn't want in my products or my body. So I set out to create Wonderbelly and produce effective digestive medicine formulated using clean* ingredients.
But that's not all that came from that journey. My recovery has also led me to do a lot of exploration into shame and the different ways we've been conditioned to feel negatively about ourselves and our bodies. My hope is that Wonderbelly and this book can help those in need find some relief, whether it be from the pain of indigestion or the shame of self-judgment.
